National Book Month
Celebrate National Book Month with Tladi Lodge Hotel in Johannesburg.
What comes to mind when October rolls around? Halloween, pumpkins and trick-or-treaters? October is also National Book Month, a time to celebrate reading books and all things literary.
Reading proficiency needs to improve throughout the world, so, during October, encourage everyone you know to read more. There are countless ways to use the month long celebration to nurture reading through projects, challenges and promotions all centered on books.
One idea is to have a book swap – a social time to exchange books with other families and friends. Another idea is to donate books to a charity or to your local library. Incentive programs can be implemented to reward your children for how many books they read, either by themselves or with an adult. Books and bookmarks make great rewards.
Families should read together so that children get a positive message that a love of books can mean a lifetime of adventure and learning. Naturally, reading at home shouldn’t be limited just to the month of October, it should be continued year-round.
Make regular family visits to the local library to check out books and read to your children every night to build the foundation required for successful reading habits.
Remember to read some of the classics, such as:
· To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
· Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
· Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
· The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
· Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
· The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
And of course there are many more.
October is a great time to “Fall into a good book.”
